Display Customization Dimming
Recent years brought significant advancements in LCD display technology. LDCs with LEDs offer an increasing number of useful functionalities – and one of them is local dimming.
How does local dimming work?
The LED backlight adapts to the picture displayed on the screen. During the process, it increases the difference between bright and dark areas to improve contrast and colors. As a result, the end-users get a picture of higher quality.
LED backlights come in two variants
Edge-lit with LEDs placed at the screen edges and pointing inward – you can choose from four different schemes: LEDs located at each edge, just the right and left edges, just top and bottom edges, and just the top or bottom edge. Direct-lit with LEDs located behind the screen, pointing towards the viewer.
What is the difference between these two options?
The key consideration is the precision of local dimming. The more lights are included in the display, the better the dimming effect will be. Note that you may notice a blooming around bright objects even in the most advanced edge-lit LCDs where LEDs are placed on each edge. For more precise local dimming in LCDs, LEDs are placed behind the screen and divided into zones that correspond to the proper spots on the display. This arrangement is also called full-array.

It offers enhanced contrast and higher picture quality. It’s energy-efficient. Since end-users rarely watch content that is completely brightened, the LEDs will be lit only selected areas of the screen. Such selective backlighting reduces power consumption significantly.
